SU Elections Staff

Mission Statement

The election team officers are committed to maintaining election integrity.  In doing so, we will protect the rights of relevant organizations, candidates, students, and those of our own team members to the best of our legitimate capabilities.

The Students’ Union (SU) Elections are run every year by a number of staff members known as the Elections Committee. Staff are hired or appointed by the SU for the sole purpose of administering election activities.

The SU usually calls for applicants interested in SU Election staff positions each year through campus media, advisories and notifications on this web site. Staff positions are regulated to current University of Calgary undergraduate students.

Election Committee

The Elections Committee is responsible and accountable for all election related processes in accordance with the Elections Bylaw and Elections Regulations.

The Elections committee consists of:

The Chair, known as the Chief Returning Officer (CRO)

The CRO administers all elections to ensure that the provisions of the Election Regulations are followed and enforced. The CRO is appointed by a majority vote of the Student Legislative Council but maintains complete independence of the SU.

Returning Officers (ROs)

Returning Officers manage the Deputy Returning Officers and polling station schedules and well as other duties assigned by the CRO.

Deputy Returning Officers (DROs)

Deputy Returning Officers supervise the secret ballot voting process, record voter or candidate complaints and answer voter questions on using the online voting system.

Elections Coordinator

A full-time SU staff member fulfills this position every year offering guidance and administrative, scheduling and clerical support to the Elections Committee.

Council Liaison Officer

A full-time SU staff member fulfills this position every year offering guidance and supervision of the election staff.  She can be contacted at scjudd@ucalgary.ca

Review Board and Tribunal

This board is convened in the event an appeal is launched regarding SU Elections.

All hearings by the Review Board are commenced by an application available at the Students’ Union office in the MacEwan Student Centre, Room 251.
