The Students' Union Sustainability Board (SUSB)
Your Students’ Union is committed to representing your interests both inside and outside the classroom. One of your SU’s main priorities is to ensure we share a campus that is environmentally responsible in all our activities, initiatives and day to day business.
To support this commitment to sustainability, in 2007 your SU Student Legislative Council approved the Students’ Union Sustainability Policy (revised in 2009). This comprehensive document is designed to help the Students’ Union achieve sustainable and responsible practices.
Coinciding with the introduction of this policy was the establishment of the SU Sustainability Board (SUSB). SUSB was created to ensure decisions and practices of your SU are environmentally sound and socially ethical.
Through its ongoing work, SUSB carries out awareness and education programs to promote better understanding of environmental issues including:
- Identifying the needs and possibilities for environmentally sound practices;
- Designing and implementing sustainable projects according to the Students’ Union Sustainability Policy;
- Assisting in the creation and funding of student initiated sustainability projects. For more on the funding of student sustainability projects visit our Sustainability Fund page
Paper and Beverage Container Recycling Program
On campus, the SU runs a beverage container recycling program. Bins are located in all buildings and the SU employs four PT special needs staff to collect beverage containers from the bins and transport them to holding cages located at designated loading docks. The (Vocational & Rehabilitation Research Institute) VRRI, Calgary's not for profit bottle depot, collects the beverage containers from the cages and provides the SU with a refundable deposit cheque monthly. The money is used to run the program and any remaining funds are reinvested in other sustainability initiatives.
The Students' Union also oversees a cardboard and paper recycling program. Paper and cardboard is collected and transported to the green BFI recycling bins by part-time special needs staff and supervised by a case worker from the Developmental Disability Resource Centre.
