2011 Students’ Union Club Awards
Recognizing Club Excellence
The University of Calgary Students’ Union is proud to introduce the first SU Inaugural Clubs Awards. Clubs Awards are designed to award excellence in team leadership, service, sustainable practices, advocacy and innovation.
With more than 220 SU sanctioned clubs on campus with thousands of members, students have endless possibilities to improve their leadership skills, make a difference in the lives of others, express themselves and network with fellow students of like interests.
The SU wants to recognize great clubs for their contributions to the quality of student life on campus.
Guidelines and Criteria
Some Details:
- If your SU sanctioned club is in good standing, we encourage you to apply for up to two of the award categories described below (a club can only be the recipient of one award).
- Make sure you tell us why your club is deserving in your chosen categories - give as much detail as possible
- You can nominate your own club or another deserving club.
- Award applications must be typed and signed by at least two club executive.
- You are welcome to include references

2011 Club Leadership Award - $250
Then tell us how your club as a whole embodies this definition and has demonstrated exceptional leadership in its activities. Make sure you give us some concrete examples of your activities.
2011 Club Community Service Award - $250
It could be an integral part of your club’s mission or it could be something you embrace as important to the fiber of your club. Tell us which and how many community service events your club has participated in or planned this past year. Give us your best and most memorable community service experiences. How do you think participating in community service enhances the student experience?
2011 Quality of Education Award - $250
Tell us what academic department your club services and what kind of academic services you provide in support of students. Give a few success stories of how your services go beyond the classroom experience and positively impact students. Tell us what makes your club rise above similarly mandated clubs.
2011 Club Innovation Award - $250
Tell us how innovative your club is. Innovation can mean creative ways of attracting members, creating unique events or activities, fundraising or providing creative services to your members and target audience. Give us some examples as to how your club has stepped away from the norm.
2011 Quality of Student Life Award - $250
Tell us how your club has made student life better for your members and perhaps students in general. What have you done to get them engaged in their campus life? What value have you added to their campus experience? Campus life is about more than what happens in the classroom – tell us how you’ve made a difference.
2011 Club Sustainability Award - $250
Ensuring sustainable practices is important for the campus community. Tell us how your club has gotten involved in recycling, re-using and reducing. It’s not necessarily about your mandate but about how you embrace and act on sustainable practices. Give us some examples of how your club has acted on sustainability.
2011 Club Advocacy Award - $250
Tell us about important issues or causes that your club has taken up and made a difference to students. Tell us what you are passionate about, your efforts and how they can or will impact students. Give us your views on the importance of advocacy to students.
2011 Best New Club Award - $250
The SU is always welcoming new clubs that can support students in meeting people of like interest and pursuing common interests or goals. Tell us how your new club has filled a void in bringing students together. Give us an idea of what you have accomplished in your first year of operations. This award is open to clubs that have been sanctioned between January 2010 and April 2011.
2011 First Year Engagement Award - $250 (Sponsored by Student Services, U of C)
For the club that actively seeks and engages first year students at the U of C. This club helps to build a sense of community and engagement across campus, and particularly among new students. Connecting with, promoting and supporting first year membership is a part of its mandate and a purposeful action taken to help students connect to leadership opportunities and build a sense of community within the U of C from the time they enter into the university. Tell us how your club has engaged first year students.
2011 Campus Pride Award - $250 (Sponsored by Student Services, U of C)
For the club that demonstrates the most campus pride and involvement across campus? This includes engaging in cross programming and collaborative efforts outside the SU (including faculties, or Student Service departments, or with other clubs. Tell us about your efforts in building pride in the U of C.
2011 Alumni Engagement Award - $250 (Sponsored by the U of C Alumni Association)
For the club that engages alumni with the campus community. This club actively seeks, promotes and fosters alumni participation in student, campus and community events and initiatives. Tell us about how your club has bridged the relationship between students and alumni and what that means to your club and the campus community as a whole.
2011 Club of the Year Award - $250
Give us examples of how your club has been successful in many of the other award areas. How have you excelled in four or more of the above award categories? Tell about your actions and successes in these areas. What distinguishes your club from the others? What key achievements have you made that make your club deserving of this special award. Tell about the significant impact your club has made on the lives of students at the University of Calgary.

Award applications can be dropped off at the SU Main Office or sent to Jennifer Abbott, VP Student Life at suvplife@ucalgary.ca . The deadline for submission is Friday, March 18.

2011 Club Awards Celebration - Announcing the Award Winners
The Clubs Committee will be responsible for reviewing all applications and selecting winners in all categories. The Committee will also post the list of award nominees and finalists in the Clubs Office.The 2011 Club Awards will be presented at a gala celebration planned for Wednesday April 13, 2011 at 5:30PM.
