POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Marketing and Design Specialist, the Design and Marketing Assistant is a key member of the marketing and communications team. This role provides design, production, coordination, and publishing assistance to support various SU departments and services. The successful candidate will create marketing materials for both print and digital platforms, ensuring consistency with SU branding while engaging student audiences.

SALARY

This is a full-time summer contract position from May to the end of August, with a wage of $17/hour. As a not-for-profit organization, it is extremely unlikely that we will be able to offer a successful candidate a salary outside of this range.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design and produce marketing materials for print and digital distribution.
  • Prepare and format files for print production.
  • Create and edit digital content for social media, web, and digital bulletin boards.
  • Assist in the creation and execution of social media campaigns.
  • Organize and maintain shared files and the SU’s photo library.
  • Ensure consistency with SU’s branding and graphic standards across all projects.
  • Research and develop creative, engaging content ideas.
  • Provide general marketing and administrative support as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate is a current student in a design-related program, such as:

  • AUArts : Visual Communications Design
  • MRU: Bachelor of Communication – Information Design
  • SAIT: New Media Production and Design or Graphic Communications and Print Technology
  • Or equivalent experience in graphic design.

Additionally, candidates should have:

  • Strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator).
  • Knowledge of design principles, typography, and print production.
  • Experience with social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok) and digital content creation.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to proofread and edit written content.
  • Photography and video production skills (an asset).

We are looking to fill up to six (6) vacancies for SU Review Board and Tribunal positions.

The Review Board and Tribunal are independent, arms-length committees of the Students’ Legislative Council, charged with the judicial functions of the Students’ Union. Students can apply to the Review Board to appeal SU decisions that they believe were unfair or in violation of the SU’s Union Bylaw or Union Policy. The Tribunal has jurisdiction over decisions of the Review Board. A student who is dissatisfied with a decision of the Review Board may be able to appeal to the Tribunal.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Manager, Restaurants oversees the operational facets of The Den & Black Lounge and the future Black Lounge Café including financial targets and performance, service standards, marketing and promotional plans, and management of staffing, security, and safety. The position reports directly to the Executive Chef.

The position regularly interacts with customers to gauge service levels, responds to and resolves complaints or concerns and manages security and safety in partnership with external organizations such as Campus Security, the Calgary Police Service, the Calgary Fire Department and the Alberta Liquor Gaming Commission (AGLC).

This role is expected to contribute to the development of strategic initiatives for the Den & Black Lounge, including:

  • business plan development and review.
  • implementing production, productivity, quality, and customer service standards and identifying trends and action plans for improvements.
  • financial objectives including forecasting requirements, food and liquor ordering, inventory, controlling and reviewing costs of goods, loss management, labour and expenses, and analyzing variances.
  • creating an inclusive, safe, and welcoming workplace culture for all employees and customers.
SALARY

For this position, the hiring range is $57,000 to $65,000. As a not-for-profit organization, it is extremely unlikely that we will be able to offer a successful candidate a salary outside of this range.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Recruit, train, and develop staff on guest service principles and practices organizing and running new hire orientations, providing coaching and ongoing feedback, outlining performance expectations, and conducting annual performance reviews.
  • Schedule staff, in alignment with the annual budget, to ensure proper coverage throughout peak times. Monitor and process payroll information.
  • Provide ongoing training and coaching of staff to increase customer service levels and staff knowledge in the areas of alcohol awareness and server intervention and safety procedures.
  • Ensure the restaurant opening and closing requirements are met, including daily reporting tasks.
  • Delegate tasks and follow up to ensure staff are meeting the operational expectations for food preparation and delivery, service times, restaurant cleanliness, and customer service.
  • Maintain high quality standards by monitoring and improving FOH procedures and execution.
  • Develop liquor menus and provide accurate costing for each item.
  • Update the POS system as required.
  • Manage and account for cash floats and shortages.
  • Communicate operational concerns and changes to other members of management and kitchen teams.
  • Lead month-end inventory and reconciliation for liquor and restaurant supplies.
  • Communicate with prospective clients to book and coordinate Den events. Work in conjunction with other departments with external events held in the Den.
  • Develop relationships with community members, student clubs and staff to promote in house events.
  • Create and maintain preventative maintenance programs and coordinate repairs with the Students’ Union Facilities team.
  • Act as a fire warden and work as part of the evacuation team in case of fire, or any emergency. Ensure completion of detailed reports related to security and medical incidents.
  • Coordinate staff training and maintain up to date records for programs such as WHMIS, ProServe, ProTect, bystander intervention, safe food handling, and other Students’ Union mandated courses.
  • Complete the annual Best Bar None program application and inspection process. Ensure that requirements are upheld throughout the year.
  • Promote and adhere to all SU policies and procedures.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
  • Strong team player with the ability to lead and motivate.
  • Confident, self-motivated, and enthusiastic.
  • Strong communication skills, organizational skills, and financial aptitude.
  • Outstanding customer service orientation.
  • Sales and marketing knowledge including familiarity with social media strategies.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deal with stressful situations during busy periods.
  • Physically able to perform work; able to stand/walk for extended periods and lift or move objects up to 40 lbs.
  • Available to work both day and night shifts, including weekends and holidays, as the business requires.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A diploma or degree in food and beverage or hospitality management is preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Three years of experience or more working in a restaurant/bar, at a supervisory level, gained within a high-volume food and beverage service environment.
  • Familiarity with the coordination of deliveries and take-out using third party platforms and/or restaurant website.
  • Involvement organizing live music events, including the management and set-up of audio equipment, would be a benefit.
  • Valid ProServe, CPR, emergency first aid, and WHMIS certification required.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Supervisor, Event Operations is a full-time, hands-on supervisory position for the MacEwan Conference and Event Centre (MCEC). The primary function is to ensure that all clients receive top quality service and that all requirements for catering, and room set-ups are executed and presented in a professional manner.

SALARY

For this position, the hiring range is $47,000 to $53,000 and the offered salary will be negotiated based on a candidate’s relative experience. As a not-for-profit organization, it is extremely unlikely that we will be able to offer a successful candidate a salary outside of this range.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct workflow of tasks to ensure all room set-ups and catering logistical requirements are met or exceeded for all catered functions, and events.
  • Participate in supervising team work, including training, performance management, and coaching staff on customer expectations and technical aspects of the space.
  • Coordinate the requirements of the on-campus delivery and catering program.
  • Ensure that the MCEC department meets operational compliance with relevant federal, provincial, municipal and university legal and policy requirements including but not limited to:
    • health and fire safety
    • emergency preparedness
    • responsible alcohol service
    • aerial lifts
    • food safety
    • MCEC delivery vehicle
  • Ensure proper storage and maintain inventory controls related to event set-up and A/V equipment.
  • Identify items and areas which require maintenance, submit tickets to the Facilities team and work with them to schedule a time for the work to be conducted.
  • Provide summarized client feedback to the MCEC department with the goal of increasing the customer experience.
  • Ensure all event spaces are maintained and cleaned.
  • Prepare and organize directional and event related signage.
  • Liaise with employees and customers to ensure all event logistics are met; troubleshoot as required to meet changing needs.
  • Review and update all processes, procedures, and guidelines related to the operations area on an ongoing basis.
  • Responsible to prepare for, open and/or close events, supervise staff during each phase of the event and ensure that rooms are set up for the next event.
  • Assess quantity and quality of food items provided for service and communicate concerns to the kitchen in a proactive manner.
  • Safely execute deliveries which require the use of MCEC catering vehicle.
  • Assist with administrative tasks where necessary, and perform other duties as assigned by the Manager, Event Operations.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school education with 3 to 5 years of related industry experience, or a college diploma with 2 years of related industry experience.
  • A minimum of one year of supervisory or lead-hand experience working with a team is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience would also be considered.
  • Hospitality industry experience required; off-site catering experience is an asset.
  • Previous experience ordering liquor and executing and reconciling bars for 20-500 persons would be considered an asset.
  • A valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License is MANDATORY.
  • Valid certification in WHMIS, first aid and Proserve are assets.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain a professional manner and manage self well under pressure.
  • Demonstrated team-orientation with equal ability to work well individually.
  • Superior communication (verbal and written) and strong attention to detail and product improvement.
  • Demonstrated planning, organizing and prioritizing abilities.
  • Cultural sensitivity; ability to work effectively with a wide variety of customers.
  • Technical Skills/Experience:
    • Intermediate computer skills (MS Excel, Word) and the ability to use company issued iPad/iPhone to review daily documents and submit required reports.
    • Proficiency in using a variety of catering and management software is required (Opera, All Seated, Formitize, 7Shifts,and Dropbox).
    • Experience in audio-visual equipment set-up and troubleshooting.
  • This is an active position involving but not limited to the following:
