PROGRAMS FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE (PURE)
This is a student‐initiated program. Students submit a research proposal and find a suitable Faculty member supervisor working in a related area. Awards of $3000, $4500 or $6000 are available for fulltime positions of 8 weeks, 12 weeks or 16 weeks duration. Applications are made to the Office of the Provost (U of C).
BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAM
Organized by the biomedical engineering graduate students and faculty. The transdisciplinary program supports students across multiple faculties and labs across campus and equips them with the necessary skills and information to have a fun and successful summer research term. Students can refine their research skills, explore resources provided by the university, and get to know other students and researchers within the university community. Students are supported by BME Summer Studentships and PURE awards.
UNDEGRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH SCHULICH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING
The Undergraduate Research Program (URP) at the Schulich School of Engineering undertakes projects that provide experiential learning to undergraduate trainees, mentorship opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, and valuable data generation for supervising faculty members. Successful students are expected to participate in the Undergraduate Research program activities over the May-August time frame (such as the tutorial series) and present at the Summer Student Symposium in August.
UNDERGRADUATE INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH GRANT
The Undergraduate International Research Grant supports University of Calgary students participating in an eligible UCalgary research program. Please note that students cannot receive both the Global Learning Award and the Undergraduate International Research Grant for the same program. Students who are on study-based programs must apply for the Global Learning Award, and those who are undertaking research must apply for the Research Grant.
NSERC UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD (USRA)
www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/students-etudiants/ug-pc/usra-brpc_eng.asp
This award is for undergraduate students in the Natural Sciences or Engineering fields who are interested in holding a student position (16‐week full time position) within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. This is a student‐initiated program. Students find a Faculty member supervisor who has a suitable project and who is a valid NSERC Discovery‐grant holder. Applications are submitted to the host department.
DAAD UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS – RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (RISE)
These scholarships are designed to foster research and work experience in an international setting (Germany).Details available from the International Student Programs, Faculty of Science (U of C) ebrobert@ucalgary.ca.
GRAEME BELL TRAVEL AWARDS (GBTA IN HEALTH & WELLNESS)
The goal of the award is to enrich and enhance the undergraduate research experience at the University of Calgary. The GBTA provides financial support to student researchers interested in presenting their research at conferences or symposiums. The GBTA is open to undergraduate students who participated in the Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE), Alberta Innovates Summer Research Studentships (SRS), or Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) in the past spring/summer.
O’BRIEN CENTER FUNDING (SUMMER STUDENTSHIPS)
The O’Brien Centre Summer Studentships are meant to encourage students to undertake an experiential opportunity in health research setting at the University of Calgary.
INTERNATIONAL GENETICALLY ENGINEERED MACHINE COMPETITION (IGEM)
iGEM is the premiere undergraduate Synthetic Biology competition. Student teams are given a kit of biological parts at the beginning of the summer from the Registry of Standard Biological Parts. Working at their own schools over the summer, they use these parts and new parts of their own design to build biological systems and operate them in living cells.
SOLAR DECATHALON (RESEARCH COMPETITION)
The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. The request for proposals for Solar Decathlon 2013 may occur in summer 2011.
GREAT NORTHERN CONCRETE TOBOGGAN RACE (GNCTR)
The team consists of over thirty students of different engineering disciplines. It involves the design of a new and innovative concrete mix and reinforcing, a lightweight and safe superstructure, and effective steering and braking systems all in order to achieve the fastest and most maneuverable 300 lb (or less) concrete toboggan in Canada.
