 I NEED HELP WITH... HOUSING

Where can I find affordable housing?

We have partnered with Places4Students to connect students with landlords who are willing and able to offer a safe, affordable place to live while you study.

What are my rights as a tenant?

We maintain a Housing page that outlines your rights as a renter, and the responsibilities you and your landlord each have.

 I NEED HELP... FINDING FOOD

I am struggling with groceries, can you help me?

We've got you. We provide food hampers for students in need through our Food Bank. Drop us an email to request a hamper and get your appointment to collect set up.

When is the food bank open?

The Food Bank's opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10:00am to 2:00pm.

What if I have specific dietary requirements?

We cater to all dietary needs, whether you need vegetarian options or food that meets your religious requirements.

 I NEED HELP WITH... FINANCES

I am struggling with money, can you help me?

There is no shame in asking for help, especially given the current cost-of-living crisis affecting students across Canada. Call or text the number 211 to get connected with a Community Resource Specialist through 211 Alberta. They can talk you through resources available to you. You could also see if you're eligible for the Government of Alberta's Emergency Needs Allowance.

If you've exhausted all other forms of emergency financial support, the SU runs a last-resort Student Hardship Assistance Fund that provides short-term help for students facing unexpected financial difficulties. See how to apply here.

I don't need urgent help but some financial relief would make my studies easier. Do you offer bursaries?

The SU maintains a range of bursaries and awards for eligible students. Check them out and find out if you are eligible on this page.

Who can I ask about doing my taxes?

The SU hosts a Volunteer Tax Program around the tax season, open to student volunteers trained to Canada Revenue Agency standards. See their page to find out if you're eligible and how to book an appointment.

My textbooks are pretty expensive.

No kidding. Thankfully, you can find cheaper second-hand textbooks at our print and book store, Bound and Copied. When you're done with them, Bound and Copied will sell your textbooks on consignment (meaning: you get paid when they sell).

I NEED HELP WITH... AN ACADEMIC ISSUE

I have been accused of misconduct or received a grade I don't agree with. Who can I talk to?

The Student Ombuds Office falls under the University of Calgary, though it is an independent and impartial body. The Office will hear your concerns, discuss them with you, offer general advice where appropriate and aid you in conflict resolution. If you have been accused of academic misconduct, feel your grades should be reappraised, or have an issue with a supervisor, see their contact details here.

Are there quiet places on campus that I can use for studying?

We maintain a map of study spaces here (updates in progress).

I want to participate in academic research. Where can I go?

If you want to conduct research over the spring and summer terms under the watch of a faculty supervisor, you might want to check out the University's Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE).

Both offer priority service to students, and some dental or optical services are covered in your student insurance plan.

 I NEED HELP... FINDING WORK

Do you ever have work opportunities for students?

We sure do. Check out our Job Opportunities for paid work openings. You can also make your résumé dazzle by taking advantage of our Volunteer Opportunities.

My summer job won't pay very well, what can I do?

You can apply for our SUPER WORK subsidy. If you're a full-time University of Calgary undergraduate, your summer job is related to your degree program, and it has you earning less than a competitive wage, you may be eligible. Read through the information provided to make sure. Applications are open from mid-April to the end of July. Successful applicants will hear back from the start of the Fall semester.

I NEED HELP WITH... PERSONAL SAFETY

On campus? Contact Campus Security for the fastest response on 403 220 5333.

Off campus? Call 9-11 for Calgary's emergency services.

How can I get around campus safely?

I was a victim of sexual or gender-based violence. Where can I go?

Firstly, we're sorry this has happened to you. Anyone can be a victim of abuse, and it is important to remember it's not your fault. We encourage you to seek help, because help is available for you. You are not alone.

The University of Calgary's Sexual and Gender Based Violence Prevention and Support Office offers a range of services and supports to victims of any background.

The City of Calgary maintains a list of contact details for counselling services, community shelters and domestic violence charities. In addition, the Calgary Police Service maintains a list of resources for victims of sexual assault and violence.

 I NEED HELP WITH... ADMISSIONS

Who can I talk to about enrolling at the University?

The University of Calgary's Undergraduate Recruitment & Admissions (RAD) team maintains plenty of information on their corner of the University's website, and they can also be contacted directly.

I'm an international student, does that matter?

Nope! The same office (RAD) has specialised advisors ready to assist you. You can find which advisor covers your country here. You can read about the visa process here.

I NEED HELP... BOOSTING MY SOCIAL LIFE

How do I meet people on campus?

The best way to find likeminded students is to join a club. Luckily, the SU provides space for over 300 clubs, so you're bound to find one that appeals to you. Check them out here, or see all the upcoming club events if you'd like to get involved ASAP. You can read more about clubs in general, including how to start one of your own, here.

You're a students' union. Where are all the concerts?

Right here, of course. MacEwan Concert Hall hosts all kinds of bands, comedians, live acts, screenings and festivals throughout the year, so be sure to check often and book early.

Is there a space for 2SLGBTQIA+ students on campus?

The Students' Union's Q Centre, located inside Room 210 in MacEwan Student Centre, is a safe, comfortable and inviting space for the University's 2SLGBTQIA+ community. There's something for everyone here, whether you value the Centre as a place to study, a source for reading up on community topics, a place to talk to a peer-support volunteer, or hub for participating in community events. Open 9am-5pm weekdays during the school year, with limited hours during spring and summer.
