MAC HALL EXPANSION SURVEY

MacEwan Hall Expansion, Sod Turning. April 29, 1985

A Brief History of Mac Hall

University of Calgary students built Mac Hall in phases. The first phase was constructed in 1967. This included the original Ballroom, and what is now the east end of the building that is home to CJSW, The Gauntlet, and NUTV.

The second phase was completed in 1987 as part of the plans for the 1988 Olympics. This expansion gave us the food court, the North and South Courtyards, and room for all of the services and businesses you see today.

Phase three was completed in 2002, and included the MacEwan Hall concert hall and MacEwan Conference and Event Centre.

It’s been twenty-three years since the last major expansion to Mac Hall. The student population has increased by nearly 40% since then, and the University is hoping to add another 10,000 students within the next few years.
Mac Hall needs to grow again.

Mac Hall Expansion FAQ

  • What is this survey about?
    • We are gathering feedback on the idea of a proposed referendum to introduce a student fee that would help fund the expansion of Machall.
  • Why is MacHall being considered for expansion?
    • MacHall is aging and its current spaces for studying, dining, and student services are no longer sufficient to meet the needs of a growing student population that now exceeds 38,000.
  • Why are undergraduate students being surveyed?
    • Mac Hall is your student building, and you should have a say in any future expansion.
  • When will construction begin?
    • That depends on a lot of factors. We are running this survey to gauge student interest and priorities for a potential future expansion. Before any construction begins, students will have determined a direction and secured initial funding.
  • Will the building be shut down?
    • We anticipate that some areas of Mac Hall may be shut down for construction phases as needed. Any redevelopment projects within Mac Hall consider the academic calendar and are timed for as little disruption as possible.
  • How much will it cost?
    • No final amount has been set. Once we hear from students and are able to set priorities for an expansion, we will be able to narrow in on a potential focus for the expansion and solicit estimates from contractors. If current students are open to initiating the collection of a building expansion fee, this fee can be used by the SU to secure a mortgage to expedite the construction process. As always, the SU will continue to be transparent about any potential fee and the building budget.
  • Can I change my mind about the proposed fee after taking the survey?
    • This survey is not a vote and does not establish any fee. It is an initial step to gauge student perspectives before deciding whether to proceed with a formal referendum. If the results indicate strong student interest and support, the SU may propose a referendum in the future, where all students will have the opportunity to vote for or against the creation of the proposed fee.
