POSITION SUMMARY

The MacEwan Conference and Event Centre is seeking a hands-on, people-focused Assistant Manager, Event Operations. This full-time role leads a team of supervisors and event staff to deliver seamless on-campus and off-site events. The primary function is to oversee event operations, manage staff performance, coordinate catering and logistics, and ensure clients receive professional, high-quality service.

SALARY

For this position, the hiring range is $55,000 to $63,000 and the offered salary will be based on a candidate’s relative experience. As a not-for-profit organization, it is extremely unlikely that we will be able to offer a successful candidate a salary outside of this range.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead and supervise a team of event supervisors and hourly staff to deliver high-quality events, including room set-ups, catering, and logistics.
  • Oversee all aspects of on-campus catering and off-site delivery, including coordinating the MCEC vehicle, staffing, and supply management.
  • Manage client interactions, troubleshoot issues, and ensure smooth execution of events, from small meetings to large-scale conferences.
  • Maintain, store, and track AV and event equipment; coordinate repairs and preventive maintenance with Facilities.
  • Monitor and manage inventory of all event supplies, furniture, linens, decor, and alcohol-related products; prepare supplier orders as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, legal, and operational standards, including emergency preparedness, responsible alcohol service, and food safety.
  • Plan, assign, and communicate daily tasks for all team members, and provide ongoing coaching, mentorship, and performance evaluations.
  • Collaborate closely with Sales, Coordination, and other SU departments to align staffing, logistics, and operational needs.
  • Actively participate in events as needed to support service delivery, problem-solving, and operational oversight.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, efficiency, and guest experience while managing labor and cost controls.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, reports, and operational documentation as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3–7 years in hospitality or event operations (college diploma or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 2 years supervising or leading a team, including salaried supervisors.
  • Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License (mandatory).
  • Experience managing events of 50–500+ guests, including catering and bar service.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Comfortable with MS Office, iPad/iPhone, and event/catering software (Opera, Prismm, Formitize, 7Shifts, Dropbox, Square POS).
  • Able to lift 10–40 lbs, push/pull 10–80 lbs, stand for extended periods, and operate aerial lifts.
  • Assets: ProServe, WHMIS, First Aid certification, university event experience.

This is a physically active role and includes:

  • Lifting/carrying: 10 to 40 lbs.

Senate Student-at-Large Representative

The Senate’s main goal is to inquire into any matter that might benefit the university and enhance its position in the community.  The Senate also confers honorary degrees to deserving individuals.

Senate Student-at-Large Representatives represent undergraduate students on the University of Calgary’s Senate. Membership on Senate involves a time commitment of approximately one meeting per month.  Regular attendance at meetings is essential.  Senate members may also be asked to serve on sub-committees which also meet approximately once per month.

  • Attending Senate and assigned committee meetings.
  • Reporting to the Students’ Union on Senate initiatives and activities.
  • Report any recommendations that it considers advisable to the Students’ Union.
  • Supporting the Chancellor by attending at least one convocation exercise and other ceremonial exercises.
  • Participating in campus activities, particularly those related to students.
  • Promoting the university and facilitating opportunities for university personnel to speak to community groups.
  • Enhancing the university’s and Students’ Union’s position in the community by promoting initiatives and activities, fostering student interests, recognizing excellence, and representing public interest.

The Review Board is an independent, arms-length committee of the Students’ Legislative Council, charged with the judicial functions of the Students’ Union. Students can apply to the Review Board to appeal SU decisions that they believe were unfair or in violation of the SU’s Union Bylaw or Union Policy.

Banquet Server/General Event Staff (seasonal)

The MacEwan Conference and Event Centre is a Students’ Union business located in the heart of the University of Calgary campus. With a dedicated events team and professional culinary staff, we are one of Calgary’s leading event facilities.

We are hiring 10–15 part-time Event Staff at $17.00/hour to support events held in Mac Hall and across campus. Flexible hours. Morning and daytime availability preferred. Shifts also include afternoons, evenings, and nights.


What you’ll do

  • Set up event rooms with linen, serviceware, décor, tables, staging, pipe and drape, and A/V
  • Attend pre-event briefings to understand timelines, menus, and special requirements
  • Deliver food and beverages on schedule under supervisor direction
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized event spaces
  • Reset rooms after events for the next function
  • Follow Students’ Union and AGLC rules for responsible alcohol service
  • Work closely with supervisors, teammates, Facilities, Security, and clients

You will receive daily direction and work under the supervision of the Manager, Event Supervisors, and Banquet Captain on shift.

Deputy Returning Officers – SU Elections

Deputy Returning Officers – SU Elections 150 150 HR

The Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) is primarily responsible for assisting the Chief Returning Officer (CRO) with the administrative requirements of the Students’ Union (SU) General and By-Election.  The DRO is a resource provided to students by the SU. As such, the incumbent is responsible for promotional and administrative tasks, ensuring the SU Elections are supported according to the direction of the SU. Required working days will be between January 19, 2026 and March 6, 2026.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in ensuring Election Candidates adhere to campaigning rules via poster patrol
  • Assist in the set-up, take down and staffing of polling stations and addressing students’ election-related queries.
  • Assist the CRO in distributing promotional materials related to voting days.
  • Assist the Manager, Student Services and CRO in executing and promoting the election forums and candidate fair.

Applicants must:

  • be current University of Calgary undergraduate students; and
  • not be involved in the SU’s elections in any other capacity (i.e., as a candidate, campaign manager, or volunteer).
